William A. Lyell is an American expert in translating and the study of Lu Xun's short stories. Embodying both faithfulness as well as expressiveness, William A. Lyell's translations have won widespread praise. Selecting William A. Lyell's representative translations as the study object, this thesis focuses on his flexible strategies, like liberal translation and domestication, supported by large numbers of examples from Diary of a Madman, and Other Stories. William A. Lyell's successful translation of Lu Xun's short stories sets a good example for prompting Chinese literature to the world.
