Abstract: The patients with cleft lip and palate have different degrees of maxillary retrusion. Intrinsic developmental deficiency as well as functional and iatrogenic factors often result in the inhibition of maxillary growth. In this paper, the morphology of cranial base and the maxillary complex, the relative position of the maxilla to the cranial base, and the reasons leading to the maxillary retrusion were reviewed.
