Abstract:

From the first generation of inert materials to the third generation of active materials, biomaterials have
developed rapidly in recent years, showing great application prospects in biomedicine, but its effective sterilization has
become increasingly difficult. Effective sterilization and disinfection of biomaterials are essential to achieve clinical
transformation. This review summarized the classical and emerging sterilization methods for biomaterials and the impact of
these sterilization technologies on the physicochemical properties of biomaterials. This review also discussed the sterilization
effect, toxicity, and problems in the practical application of various methods, intending to provide a reference for the
selection of sterilization methods in the research of biomaterials.
