Abstract: Over the past three decades or more, modern corpus linguistics has seen rapid development and fast growth in its research population. Different schools of academic thoughts are introduced to the research field, communicate and interact with each other. As a result, corpus linguistics is going through a period of constant and unavoidable changes. However, as a discipline, corpus linguistics should have something to adhere to. This article attempts to discuss the three main foundations of corpus linguistics as a separate discipline, to respond to some different voices made by some researchers, and to set forth clear and definite positions and attitudes toward some important issues.
