Abstract: Objective To explore the impact of primary breast reconstruction after radical mastectomy on the prognosis of breast cancer patients. Methods A total of 46 patients with early-stage breast cancer from January 2003 to April 2009 were enrolled in this study.According to the different treatment methods, the patients were divided into two groups:the first-stage breast reconstruction group(reconstruction group,n=23)and the radical mastectomy group(mastectomy group,n=23).The clinicopathological features, recurrence and metastasis rates, overall survival rates, satisfaction rates and quality of life were compared between the two groups. Results There were no significant differences between the two groups in clinicopathologic features.During postoperative follow-up,there was no statistically difference between the two groups in recurrence and metastasis rate(P=0.913)and overall survival rate(P=0.585).Compared with the mastectomy group, patients in the reconstruction group were more satisfied with the appearance of breast reconstruction. Conclusion Postmastectomy reconstruction for patients with early-stage breast cancer does not affect the oncologic risks and overall survival, and could improve the quality of life.
