The "seed and soil" theory in tissue and organ ageing

Abstract: Population ageing has become a global concern. Reducing the occurrence of ageing-related diseases is a major challenge in preventive medicine. The establishment of a scientific ageing theory will provide an important basis for the formulation of effective anti-ageing strategies. Drawing on the research experience in tissue engineering, the "seed and soil" theory in tissue and organ senescence was proposed: "seed" represents the stem cells, and "soil" represents the tissue microenvironment. The depletion of "seed " and deterioration of "soil" play a key role in tissue and organ senescence. Based on these characteristic changes of senescent tissue, a comprehensive anti-ageing strategy called "weeding, fertilizing and seeding" was proposed: removing senescent cells, improving tissue microenvironment, and replenishing stem cells. The existing anti-ageing technologies were further re-classified based on this strategy.
