    DOING META-ANALYSIS IN SLA:PRACTICES,CHOICES,AND STANDARDS

    Meta-analysis is a statistical method used to synthesize the cumulative effect of an interventional treatment or a certain relationship that has been subjected to empirical investigation.Notwithstanding the increasing popularity of meta-analysis in second language acquisition(SLA)research,there is considerable methodological inconsistency in the 22SLA meta-analyses published to date.Also,given the highly technical nature of some aspects of this statistical procedure and the specialized knowledge associated with it,it is a daunting task to conduct a meta-analysis and understand or interpret meta-analytic results.This paper seeks to solve the conundrum surrounding metaanalysis by explicating its basic procedure and technical aspects in an accessible manner.Utilizing SLA meta-analyses as examples,it discusses the methodological options of each stage of a meta-analysis,makes recommendations about how to handle some key issues,and points out the pitfalls that might undermine the robustness and credibility of meta-analytic findings.

    Cognitive Linguistics and corpus linguistics have emerged as arguably the two most influential contemporary linguistic approaches in applied linguistics,as evidenced by an increasing number of studies using either one or the other approach.However,due perhaps to the surface differences between them,there has not been much research on how the two approaches can be combined to make language research more valid and language teaching more effective.This paper discusses the need and existing effort to integrate the two linguistic approaches in language research and teaching.The paper first explores the theoretical grounds and rationales for combining them.It then describes how such a combined approach may enhance(1)the validity and reliability of research on language use and(2)the effectiveness of language learning/teaching.Finally,the paper discusses the challenges and future directions of employing such a combined approach.

    An adequate characterization of L2learners' competence should include its three dimensions:accuracy,appropriateness,and automaticity.Much progress has been made to assess L2learners' appropriate use of an L2in more recently years.In contrast,much less attention has been given to the assessment of automaticity.This paper attempts to achieve four goals:characterize L2competence,explain the importance of automaticity in second language acquisition research,discuss the limitations of current assessment methods and their associated problems in research,and outline a set of test methods that may be more effective in assessing automatic competence in a second language.Studies in which these methods were employed are reviewed.

    SOURCES OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE ANXIETY:TOWARDS A FOUR-DIMENSION MODEL

    In the past three decades,the study of foreign language anxiety has attracted the attention of an increasing number of researchers and language teachers.Studies in a variety of language learning contexts have found that approximately one-third of students studying a foreign language experience at least a moderate level of foreign language anxiety.Research has also reported various types of negative effects of foreign language anxiety on foreign language learning.Since foreign language anxiety is not only prevalent among language learners,but appears to interfere with language learning,it must be taken seriously in all types of language instruction.Most language teachers are interested in the causes of foreign language anxiety so that they can create more comfortable language learning environments.Although sources of foreign language anxiety have been identified here and there across the literature,there has not been a systematic and comprehensive report of all the sources.This paper attempts to propose a four-dimension source model of foreign language anxiety based on a thorough literature review and the researcher' s own insights.

    ON PSYCHOLINGUISTIC AND ACQUISITION STUDIES OF RELATIVE CLAUSES:AN INTERDISCIPLINARY AND CROSS-LINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVE

    This review article primary aims at researchers in the second language acquisition field but draws on existing literature in broad areas of(applied)linguistics including formal syntax,psycholinguistics,and L1acquisition.This paper discusses the topic of relative clause(RC)structures,summarizing studies that explore the comparative difficulty of different types of RCs when considering the factors of extraction,modifying position,animacy,corpus frequency,etc.A list of major theories pertinent to behavioral patterns of RCs are reviewed,including the implicational generalization of the Noun Phrase Accessibility Hierarchy and processing models such as the dependency locality theory/linear distance theory and structural distance theory.It is believed that studies in East Asian RCs,particularly in Chinese,with its rare combination of head-final directions and SVO word order,bear significance in disambiguating the validity of these different processing/acquisition theories,which were most often proposed based on English RC studies.With an interdisciplinary and cross-linguistic perspective,I present a wide range of existing research using various tasks,measures,and reporting different results,with a focus on Chinese RC acquisition.While presenting the theoretical proposals and empirical research for and against them,I review those previous studies in terms of theoretical background,design,methodology,and implications.I suggest that the field can move forward when future studies use a variety of tasks and data types,especially by incorporating psycholinguistically-sound techniques in second language acquisition research,and one can expect studies in Chinese RCs to be particularly fruitful.

    UNDERSTANDING QUANTIFIERS AND SCOPE INTERPRETATIONS IN A SECOND LANGUAGE

    This article reviews the main published studies on the acquisition of quantifiers and scope interpretations by adult second language learners,and discusses how this research affects the development of theories in second language acquisition(SLA).It points out that research in this area contributes directly to the understanding of L1transfer effects and the availability of Universal Grammar(UG)to adult second language learners.Research along this line also sheds light on the issue of how second language acquisition differs from first language acquisition,and thus provides deeper insight into some issues that arise in first language acquisition.Although results of the existing studies seemed favorable to L1transfer effects and the accessibility to UG,this area of study is still rather new and more innovative research is needed to strengthen the arguments.

    Phonological perception and processing is not only important in spoken language recognition and comprehension,but also important in the development of reading ability.This review paper examined phonological perception and processing in a second language(L2 )among infants,school-aged children,and adults.Infants are born with the ability to discriminate universal sets of phonetic distinctions,but this ability may decline or be lost later on due to lack of corresponding linguistic experience.For both children and adults,their L2 phonological processing skill is influenced by their L1 knowledge and not only L1 phonology but also the orthography impacts the L2 phonological processing.L1 phonological skills contribute to the development of L2 reading skills over and above the within-L2 phonological skills.Limitations and future research direction are discussed.

    Scholarly interest in the possibility of China English(CE)has expanded recently as the importance of the English language in Chinese education and society continues to grow.However,there have yet been few studies which examine the putative forms of CE in tandem with attitudes about CE in an educational context.Using an acceptability judgment task(AJT)and interviews involving 30Chinese teachers of English evaluating English texts written by Chinese university students,this study explores participants' beliefs,attitudes,and ideologies about the variety of CE and its potential or emerging characteristics.The study suggests that rejection of CE as an abstract concept may be related to labeling writers' usage as unacceptable"Chinglish."While English usages perceived as clearly influenced by the Chinese language are more likely to be rejected,the frequency of rejections forms a continuum illustrating a degree of acceptance for some potential features of CE.
