Abstract: The further understanding of cellular scaffolds, cell factors, intervertebral disc (IVD) cell pathophysiology and BMSCs biology have laid the foundation of cell-based therapies for IVD degeneration. Moreover, a series of animal studies and vitro experiments also confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of cell-based therapies for IVD degeneration. It shows a wide prospect of clinical application in the future. The current research status of BMSCs in IVD tissue engineering was reviewed.
