Abstract: As a hot topic in sociolinguistics, linguistic landscape mainly refers to the use of written language signs in public sphere and its symbolic meaning. Inspired by this concept, a new sub-concept of linguistic landscape is put forward in this paper, namely translation landscape, which refers to the written use of two or more languages in public sphere, information contained in the different languages in a single sign fully or partially corresponding with each other. This paper investigates 170 bilingual and multilingual signs taken in the West Lake scenic area in Hangzhou, and through quantitative and qualitative analyses finds that various factors have an influence on the overall formation and characteristics of translation landscape in tourist areas, such as linguistic ideology, language policy, the designer and reader of public signs, English imperialism, major adjacent countries, official or non-official signs etc.
