Abstract:

Contemporary Jewish American writer Philip Roth is known as the “living myth of American literature”. Since the 1980s, China’s academic circles have made fruitful achievements in Roth research. Since 2013, research on Roth in China has shown a new trend of development, such as placing his works within Western literary traditions and culture to examine his narrative art and creative style; exploring the political significance of Roth’s works in the grand historical context from the perspective of “cultural turn”; focusing on the Jewish nature of Roth’s works and his unique perspective on identity to delve deeply into the historical significance and practical connotations of the reproduction of identity issues. The research achievements in China from 2013 to 2022 have been impressive, but there is still room for further expansion and exploration, such as a systematic and holistic research on Roth, the exploration of “Americanism” in his works, a systematic review and discourse on his critical thinking, and based on China’s unique academic context, from the perspectives of spatial theory and ethical environment theory, further enriching Roth’s research in China.
