    The Framework and the Componential Elements of of Business English Descipline

    As a measure adopted to reform China's higher education, Business English has been established as an undergraduate major by the Ministry of Education of PRC. Relative to the rapid domestic development of Business English professional education, the research on Business English as an academic discipline is lagging in general, bringing about a fairly weaker theoretical foundation and hindrances to the disciplinary development of Business English. In the academic circles, Business English discipline remains an issue less clarified and calls for more studies that present deep and comprehensive understanding. The author, in this paper, based on a literature review, discusses the nature of Business English, analyzes and summarizes from the perspective of ESP studies the unique features of Business English. By regarding Business English as the Lingua Franca in business communication, the author explains the symbiosis and multi-dimensionalities that Business English has in nature and identifies the disciplinary boundaries and contents of Business English. Moreover, the author explains critical issues related to intellectual discipline of Business English, such as the definition, the research objects, the features, the research fields, the theoretical systems, and the research methodology/methods, and thus identifies the framework and components that constitute the discipline of Business English.

    A Review of Language Policy in International Maritime Organization

    The study and implementation of language policy (LP) of International Maritime Organization (IMO) will certainly be conducive to the enhancement of shipping and marine communication in China. Thus, this paper is dedicated to shedding light on the structures, features and enforcement of IMO LP in the light of theories of LP and language management. The study shows that IMO LP is comprised of multilingual administrative LP and monolingual marine LP, and the former can be further divided into official LP and working LP, and latter is maritime English. Besides, the paper argues that IMO LP is characterized with clear classification and stratification in LP contents, and strong language ideology as well as weak language practice in LP components.

    Revisit the Concept in Language Philosophy and Linguistics

    The study on concept is now becoming a hot topic in Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence. As early as ancient Greek times, philosophers started to think about the issue of concept such as definition, features and boundary, and gradually formed Aristotle's Classical Concept View. After modern Linguistics and Language Philosophy came into being, concept is studied intensively in different fields. On the one hand, the Logical Analysis School of Language Philosophy defines and studies concept by distinguishing the object and concept in the sentences, while the Concept Analysis School focuses on the analysis of concept from the meaning of words. Both believe that concept and language are inseparable, and it is impossible to talk about concept without language, thus pushing the research of concept forward. On the other hand, researching concept from the perspective and method of linguistics has broadened the boundaries of concept research and formed new linguistic theories. Conceptual Dependency Theory believes that each unit of human language is composed of concepts, through which conceptual expressions can describe meaning and then describe human behavior. Based on Function-effect Chain, Hierarchical Network of Concepts Theory proposes a four-layer system of language concept space. It is used to express the interconnection among concepts and help computers to process natural language. Studying concept in Linguistics and Language Philosophy, demonstrating the development of research on concept, revealing the misunderstandings and errors in concept studies can provide references and guidelines for further theoretical research on Natural Language Understanding, Cognitive Intelligence and applied research on Natural Language Processing.

    Interpersonal Meanings of the Values of Modal Operators in English Political Interviews

    Modality is one important part of the interpersonal meta-function, which is particularly essential in political discourse. Based on Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar, this paper tries to analyze the interpersonal meanings of the values of modal operators of 30 English political interviews in order to see how interpersonal meanings are revealed through the usage of different values of modal operators. Results indicate that both sides tend to use similar and different amounts of modal operators with different values. The use of different values of modal operators by the interviewers and the interviewees is influenced by both social roles and roles in the interaction. Usages of different values of modal operators not only show the power relationships, but also show the interaction of the participants. This study hopes to provide a new perspective for understanding political discourse.

    The Distribution of the Double Object Argument Alternations with Unique Areal Typology in Zhuang

    Typologically it is rarely found in a language both double object (DO) and shifted double object (SDO). However, DO/SDO alternations seem prevalent in Chinese Southern dialects and in south-China ethnic languages. Previous studies have mainly focused on structural analyses of these two alternative structures, with little work on precise quantification regarding their usage frequencies and grammatical acceptability. Using a picture-elicitation task and a grammaticality judgment task, we aimed to verify the frequency of use of the DO/SDO alternations in Zhuang. Our results showed that in terms of production rate, significantly more SDO utterances were produced than DO utterances, whereas in terms of grammaticality rating, no significant difference was found between DO and SDO. We conclude that SDO as a basic structure is more prevalent in Zhuang, which is a hallmark of areal typology.

    Cognitive Validity: A Review of its Rationale, Definition, Models and Empirical Studies

    Cognitive validity, as an important aspect of Weir's socio-cognitive validation framework (2005), refers to the design of test tasks which elicit from test-takers cognitive processes similar to those required by language users in their real-life communicative domains. Weir's framework not only allows for a better understanding of the constructs measured in language tests, but also complements traditional construct validation studies which feature factor analysis in the production of validity evidence. This paper offers a careful review on cognitive validity in terms of its theoretical foundation, concept development, cognitive models and empirical studies. The paper also indicates certain limitations in relevant studies, in particular concerning their model use, scope, methodology and application of the findings. It is to be hoped that this short review will be of value for researchers in their exploration of cognitive validity, thus contributing more to test design and use, and to the whole language assessment validation process.

    Learner's Speech Self-repair and Effective Foreign Language Teaching

    In recent years, effective foreign language teaching has invited much attention from the academic world. The present paper, from the perspective of communicative strategy and anchoring on corpus data, discusses the learner's speech self-repair and effective foreign language teaching. The findings are that in the process of learner's speech self-repair, problems do exist that include quite a number of undetected speech errors, scanty use of fillers and overuse of self-repetition, etc. that much challenge the effectiveness in foreign language teaching. It holds that effective foreign language teaching shall both enable learners to attain the comprehensible input of “high quality and quantity” and through interaction as well as negotiation of meaning to achieve the optimal comprehensible output on the basis of intake and internal comprehension in the social-like setting and therefore proposes that the use of learner's speech self-repair, an effective communicative strategy and learning strategy, not only serves as the yardstick for judging the quality and quantity of the input, but also helps the learner, during the interaction, to self-monitor the speech, test the hypothesis, notice the gap and self-regulate the errors to achieve the modified output. Therefore, we shall not only emphasize the language input and output, but also stress the input of necessary strategies for language use so as to achieve the final enhancement in language know-how. “Reading for Discussion” teaching model provides a very worthwhile venue for the use of speech self-repair as well as for the effective tr the degree of positive L1 transfer, the lower the lexical and syntactic complexity. Based on the conclusions above, some suggestions are provided for the teaching and testing practice of Chinese English learners' L2 writing.

    New Frontiers and Reflections on Corpus Linguistics

    What new features have emerged from corpus linguistics at the international level in recent years? What are the research foci? What controversial issues still exist concerning corpus studies? In order to explore the answers to the above questions, we reviewed all the articles published in the past decade in “International Journal of Corpus Linguistics” which has already been regarded as one of the most representative academic journals in the field of corpus linguistics. We classified all the papers according to the research contents, generalizing the main features and exploring the new research frontiers. Based on the review, we proceeded to provide reflections on some controversial issues concerning corpus phraseology, the application of corpus, the cross-disciplinary research of corpus, statistics in corpus research, the application of corpus research to the study of non-English languages, and so on. Both the review and the reflections are expected to shed light on the study of corpus linguistics in China.

    A Review on Corpus-based Critical Discourse Analysis in China

    There has been growing attention to corpus-based discourse analysis. Relevant articles published in CSSCI and core foreign language journals were retrieved, classified, summarized, and reviewed to present the research findings and development trend of corpus-based critical discourse analysis in China. This study finds that there are few theoretical and much more empirical studies.For empirical studies, news/media discourses and political discourses have received more attention, but recently other discourses, such as web discourses, fashion discourses, speech discourses, and general discourses, have started to attract attention.The research focus is mainly on image construction, especially on national image construction, but there are also studies on the discourse construction of city image, enterprise image, the elderly's image, gender identity, specific group identity, individual identity etc.

    Phraseological Features of Cover Letters written by Chinese science and engineering majors

    Cover letters belong to an important promotional business-writing genre. This paper adopts a corpus-driven phraseological perspective, and extracts numerous multiword sequences from Chinese Science and Engineering Majors Written English Corpus by using the phrase-list approach, the node-word approach and the phrase-frame approach. The purpose is to examine formal and functional features of multi-word sequences in cover letters written by Chinese science and engineering majors. It is found that learners are generally capable of using various semi-fixed phrases with specific semantic, functional, and move features so as to achieve communicative purposes. Learner texts are characterized by the recurrency of conditional expressions and first person pronouns, revealing the differences in the use of politeness strategies across the learner and the reference corpora.

    A Corpus-based Contrastive Study of Human and Machine English Translation of Chinese paratactic Sentences

    Based on the corpus statistics, this paper makes a comparative study of the syntax and discourse of Chinese paratactic sentences in human English translation and machine translation, and it finds that between human translation and machine translation there exist significant differences in the choice of clause subject, verb types, sentence categories, link words and the change of the word order in the target language. The proportion of English clauses, non-restrictive verbs and subjective link words in human translation is significantly higher than that in machine translation, while compared with human translation, machine translation has less adjustments or changes in the subject and word order of the original text. These characteristics suggest that machine translations still needs to narrow the gap with human translations in terms of the variety of verb types, the diversity and complexity of syntactic structures and the richness of link patterns in the text, so as to enhance the vividness, authenticity and literariness of literary language.
