    A Hypothesis for the Basic Approach to Foreign Language Learning and the Four Tactical Measures Influencing the Future of Foreign Language Education

    A hypothesis for the Basic Approach to Foreign Language Learning (BAFLL, hence); 1.1 The BAFLL; 1.2 The three foundations and one core of the BAFLL; There are the four tactical measures having a great influence on foreign language teaching (FLT) in the future. 2.1 We do need the cultured function of FLT;2.2 It is necessary “to remain alert to a very real danger of new educational technology and curriculum and teaching methods in the light of the latest scientific advances” by Chomsky(briefly, ‘Chomsky's alert'); 2.3 There is no necessity to begin FLT in primary schools in China; 2.4 Reading aloud is also counted as one of the tactical measures in FLT.
    The basic approach to FLL includes 10 year span (for learners in middle schools, high schools and universities) + 30 minutes for reading loudly every day + 1 paragraph (taken from textbooks) every week for learners to be repeated from memory + 50 books in the original within 10 years. for intensive and extensive reading + 300 pages within 10 years. for learners to do writing exercises + teachers' (of foreign language) giving their classes in their foreign languages.
    The core of the BAFLL (10 years.) is that we use organs of our own bodies such as ears, eyes, tongues in addition to brains and hands, instead of extremely complex electrical teaching equipments beyond our bodies, so as to accumulate the sense of sound and the sense of language. All this is immensely beneficial to giving full scope to learners' creativity and to taking full advantage of their potential. By the way, we can save a great number of investments as well as much time and energy.
    In this world, what is scientific, beautiful and harmonious tends to be simple and convenient. So, in FLT any scheme or program or project should not be designed extremely complexly, gigantically and expensively. Thus, we can have our future of FLT in our pockets.

    English Education in China: Perspective and Prospective

    The present article studies the status of English and the characteristics, the current state of affairs and the existing problems of English education in China, proposes the goal of development, including the goal of cultivating highly qualified English majors, and finally put forward the ways of designing the reform and the methods and measures for the development of English education in China. We argue that English education need to be developed, reformed, and planned, and need to take actual measures and actions for its future development.

    A Contrastive Study of the Reference Frames and Spatial Expressions in Chinese and English

    Research is quite rich in spatial language and cognition; however, there is little work done contrastively in Chinese and English. This study compares and analyzes the spatial expressions and frames of reference (FORs) used in Chinese and English discourse within Danziger's (2010) four way typology. The results show that there are likenesses and dissimilarities in spatial descriptions between the two languages. The likenesses are that both languages utilize the Figure Ground and Ground Figure sequence and the four FORs to describe the objects' location. The dissimilarities are as follows. First, the Ground Figure structures occur overwhelmingly in Chinese while the Figure Ground structures are prevailing in English. Second, absolute FORs are more preferred in Chinese, but object centered FORs more so in English. Third, in Chinese a postposition is normally required, with or without a preposition concurring, to localize the Figure, whereas in English a preposition is always used to specify the Figure's location. It is also suggested that the similarities in spatial descriptions between the languages are driven by universal cognition in space, yet the differences thus found are attributable to cognitive and semantic diversity.

    The Academic Literacies Paradigm and Its Application for Academic English Writing Course Design

    Through a critical review of the English academic writing research over the past 50 years, this article indicated that studies on English academic writing have witnessed a gradual paradigm shift from focus on the language skills to the linguistic community socialization, and the integration of language and disciplinary subject matter in recent years. Consequently, in academic writing research field writers' personal literacy practices and social culture context have gained more attention, which resulted in the emergence of “Academic Literacies” paradigm. Then, this article reviews the current trend of academic literacies paradigm on its background, rationale and pedagogy. Based on the discussion of academic literacies, this article proposes the principles on the application of such paradigm in academic writing. Then the article provides an example on its application in writing practice. This article points out that academic literacies paradigm promotes the integration of language skills with disciplinary content knowledge, which has important implications on the academic writing course design at the tertiary level in China.

    Adaptability: A Study of Carlos Rojas' Translation

    Yan Lianke's novels, especially the English version of Shou Huo, namely Lenin's Kisses, soon were in the spotlight of literary translation after Yan reaped Kafka Prize for Literature. Therefore, the adoption of appropriate method and theory for translation became a hot topic. This paper aims at exploring how Carlos Rojas, the translator of Yan's fiction, exerted his initiative in the translation of this work. He used translation strategies like transformation, adding and deletion, coinage and free translation to bridge the cultural gap between China and English speaking countries, and finally introduced this Chinese literary work into the English world successfully.

    The Present Enlightenment on Translation Strategies of The Story of the Stone by David Hawkes

    Nowadays, the cultural exchanges between China and countries around the world are increasingly closer, and the introduction of Chinese culture and literature has attracted more and more attention and researches. Translation and introduction of Chinese literature is the process in which powerful cultures output themselves to the weak ones, thus the Strategy for Chinese Culture Going Aboard will certainly face many challenges. The Chinese classical novel The Story of the Stone, which is known for its long history of translation, the wide variety of translation versions, as well as its smooth and vivid translation style, has been at the forefront of translation and introduction of Chinese culture. David Hawkes reconstructed The Story of the Stone with creativity, compensatory, and artistry in terms of the acceptances of readers, the aesthetics, and the ideology, making his version coruscate brand new charms in foreign land. His art of translation provides research paradigm to literature translation strategy but also has significant enlightenment and reference to Strategy for Chinese Culture Going Aboard.

    A Study on Jeffrey C. Kinkley's Successful Translation of Borden Town

    With the rapid growth of China's economy, an increasing number of Chinese classic literary works have been introduced to the west. However, many of them have not been accepted as expected. Jeffrey C. Kinkley, an American sinologist, who has been studying Shen Congwen since 1970s, wrote the remarkable book The Oddessey of Shen Congwen and translated Shen's masterpiece Borden Town into English, making it the best of the four English versions. Jeffrey C. Kinkley's translation of Borden Town owes its success not only to various translation skills such as source text oriented translation, detailed translation and omission, but also his long time research of Shen Congwen. Kinkley's translation provides a successful example for the “going out” of Chinese literature.
