Abstract:

The Road Not Taken, a famous poem by Robert Frost, includes tremendous instances of metaphor among its lines. The preexisting researches do well in discussing the philosophical understandings of life behind the poem’s plain discourse of wording. However, their analyses of metaphor are usually confined to certain fragments in isolation and focus exclusively on the semantic expansion of some specific lexical items. The present research intends to dig out as many metaphorical devices as possible in the poem and hence present a full picture of its metaphors both lexically and grammatically.

Key words: The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost, lexical metaphor, grammatical metaphor, metaphorical device
