Knowledge vs. Non Knowledge:An Empirical Study on the Context Sensitivity of Knowledge Sentences
    ZHOU Xiang, LIU Longgen
    2016, 16 (05):  32-38.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2016.05.003
    Abstract ( 339 )   PDF (1376KB) ( 90 )
The context sensitivity of knowledge sentences has become one of the central topics in experimental philosophy (of language) and experimental epistemology. The present study aims to investigate whether the truth value judgments of knowledge sentences vary with context and which factor(s) may impact folk judgments about knowledge ascriptions/denials. Ninety three postgraduates from eight universities in Shanghai were randomly selected to participate in a questionnaire survey, which includes three pairs of contrastive cases (six in total). SPSS was run to produce the descriptive statistics and paired sample t tests. The findings have provided some evidence for the context sensitivity of knowledge sentences. After the survey a follow up interview was conducted with ten participants selected from the survey takers and the possible factors which may influence the use of knowledge sentences were finally analyzed with the help of our interview data.

Introducing a Discursive Approach to News Values
    HUAN Changpeng
    2016, 16 (05):  45-51.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2016.05.005
    Abstract ( 501 )   PDF (5658KB) ( 77 )
This paper intends to introduce a discursive approach to the study of news values. It first reviews previous approaches to news values in the field of journalism and communication studies; then it focuses on news values and news language. The newly introduced discursive approach is subsequently applied to examine news values as discursively constructed two cases studies. One case examines the construction of news values in a specialized corpus of news reporting on bushfires in Australia; and the other case examines the construction of news values in the coverage of the Eastern Star Accident in the Guardian and China Daily. The affordances and constraints of the discursive approach are discussed and suggestions for future research are recommended.

A Comparative Analysis of Acquisition and Attrition Sequence of Relative Clauses
    NI Chuanbin
    2016, 16 (05):  52-59.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2016.05.006
    Abstract ( 250 )   PDF (1114KB) ( 89 )
“An Inventory Measuring Attrition Sequence of Relative Clauses” was employed,by recruiting investigate 175 Chinese college graduates, to explore the attrition rules of relative clauses by comparing with acquisition sequence from the previous studies. The following conclusions were derived: (1) Both L1 and L2 learners of different mother tongues share a similar acquisition sequence of relative clauses, that is, the relative clauses of Object(antecedent) Subject(relative pronoun) are acquired first, followed by those of Object(antecedent) Object(relative pronoun) and Subject(antecedent) Subject(relative pronoun). The last acquired are those of Subject(antecedent) Object(relative pronoun). (2) The attrition sequence of English as a second language mirrors their acquisition sequence, and this discovery agrees with Jakobson's Regression Hypothesis, that is, first acquired, last attrited.

    YANG Ronghua
    2016, 16 (05):  64-68.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2016.05.008
    Abstract ( 273 )   PDF (1038KB) ( 51 )
Needs oriented University Enterprise Cooperative instruction mode has been widely recognized in China's current education of MTI. However, there still exists many common problems in mutual cooperation such as lacking both/multi win cooperative mechanism, selecting qualified instructors with great difficulties, insufficient depth and width of cooperative teaching contents, unguaranteed course quality, instable teaching team, disconnected continuing education. In order to upgrade MTI students' professional abilities and qualities in process focused training, university and enterprise need to intensify effective cooperation, improve mutually beneficial cooperation mechanism, work out reasonable selection standards of qualified professional and practice based instructors, define teaching contents and goals, formulate course evaluation criteria, improve the mechanism of long term cooperation, form relatively stable teaching team, provide continuing education opportunities.

On Goldblatt's Remarks on the Essence of Translation
    ZHOU Lingshun
    2016, 16 (05):  76-80.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2016.05.010
    Abstract ( 365 )   PDF (1112KB) ( 185 )
This article reexamines Goldblatt's remarks on the essence of translation. His remarks come from the problems he met and his corresponding measures in the complicated translating process. In order to look into the matter more precisely, this article puts forward a new approach distinguishing between “intra translation” and “extra-translation”, and the prototypical “translation” and “translation as a social activity”, which may throw some lights on the debate over a new orientation for translation at present.

Significance of Research on Gladys Yang's Translation in the Vision of National Translation Program
    REN Dongsheng, LANG Ximeng
    2016, 16 (05):  81-85.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2016.05.011
    Abstract ( 330 )   PDF (1581KB) ( 144 )
Gladys Yang is one of the “foreign” translators in the contemporary Chinese translation history. The translation she independently completed and did in collaboration with Yang Xianyi, her husband, range from classical Chinese literature to modern literature covering almost all genres. Gladys, who was also the performer of national translation program, was de individualized to some degree owing to highlighting Yang Xianyi in the previous research. This paper, from the perspective of national translation program, attempts to focus on her independent translation. Gladys' translation, as an indispensable effort of New China's national translation program, is an illustration of selective adaption to national translation program.

Translator Behavior Viewed from Identity Construction of Chinese American Acquired Language Writers — A Case Study of Chinese Translation of The Silence of Flight
    TANG Lei
    2016, 16 (05):  86-89.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2016.05.012
    Abstract ( 562 )   PDF (1018KB) ( 102 )
Chinese American acquired language writers have hybridized identity features of new migrants, with their writings unfolding the confusion and cultural adjustment resulting from the conflict of the two cultures. Whether the translator can realize the writers' identity construction process behind the words or not will influence his translation behavior. Through the analysis of the Chinese translation of The Silence of Flight, it is found that the translation strategies of cultural reconstruction and back translation in the broader sense are used by the translator, which indicates “utility attaining” outweighs “truth seeking” from the perspective of Translator Behavior Criticism. The translation basically embodies the writer's identity orientation from her gazing at homeland as well as her identity anxiety in “the other” culture. In light of the uniqueness of the contexts and the cultures, it is suggested that appropriate amplification should be used in the translation of the cultural background information of new migrants' experiences in western countries to better reflect the deep connotation of acquired language works.
