Abstract: Dermal fibroblasts divide into distinct subpopulation lineages:papillary fibroblasts(Fp)in superficial dermis layer, and reticular fibroblasts(Fr)in deep dermis layer. The two lineages have differences not only in cell functions and differentiation potentials, but also in wound healing, hair follicle formation, neogenesis, and skin senescence. In this paper, the differences of cell morphology, function, source, differentiation, specific expression between the two lineages, and their role in skin regeneration and maintaining homeostasis were all reviewed.

Key words: Papillary fibroblasts, Reticular fibroblasts, Wound healing, Skin senescence, Hair follicle formation and neogenesis
