    On the Onomatopoeia and Syllabification of “biáng” in Shaanxi Dialect

    The structure of syllables is related to the pronunciation, prosodies, and word formation of a language. And the description, processing, and acquisition of the phonological systems of syllables will exert a great influence on language studies and language education. “Biángbiáng noodles”, as a special snack in Shaanxi province, spread far and wide, and the Chinese character “biáng” is also well known in Shaanxi. However, the written form is not included in all kinds of contemporary dictionaries as well as Chinese font. Therefore, the analysis of the onomatopoeia and syllabification,and the exploration of the coming into being of the special character in Shaanxi dialect can help more people understand the “biáng” character on the one hand. On the other hand, we also hope to develop the function of word building in word processing so as to provide convenience for people to type the character.

    An Empirical Study on L1 Transfer in Learning L2 Collocations of Mental Lexicon

    Based on the theory of bilingual mental lexicon, this paper aims to investigate the Chinese EFL learners' acquisition of L2 collocations and examine the effect of L1 transfer, L2 proficiency, and collocation patterns on their collocation acquisition. An instant collocation decision test was employed, consisting of congruent collocations (positive transfer) and non congruent ones (sub divided into L1 specific and L2 specific, i.e. negative transfer and non transfer). All the collocations fall into two parts: V N and A/N N. The findings show that all the three variables have main effects, but with no interactions. Both groups have similar tendency: V N>A/N N; non transfer > positive transfer > negative transfer. Except for non transfer collocation, the high level group performed better than the low level group.

    On the Relationship between College English Teachers' Information Literacy and Teaching Effectiveness in the Information Age

    The rapid development of information and communication technology has posed great challenges and set new requirements to teachers' information literacy. The article has examined the relationship between college English teachers' information literacy and their teaching effectiveness by using SPSS to analyze data collected by a questionnaire, classroom observation, and an interview, which reveals that teachers' information literacy, especially their ability in integrating information technology into their teaching activities, plays a crucial role in their teaching effectiveness, and students' acquisition of explicit language knowledge. Therefore, the improvement of English teachers' information literacy calls for the efforts from teachers, higher education institutions, and the national educational policy makers as well.

    The Translation of Mao Zedong Poems: Quest for More Perfection

    The new environment of international culture today provides us with potential new chances to convey in translation more cultural information of Mao Zedong poems. It is desirable to translate them (here, the seven sinogram octaves and quatrains) into artefacts with fixed verse length and conformity to traditional English metres (e.g. 12 13 syllables in 6 feet), but using only one rhyme in each piece, in order to demonstrate to international readers more substantially the unique charms of classical Chinese poetry. This is an innovation in poetry translation for more perfection by appropriately combining Chinese with English elements; and credibly the international English readers will gradually accept such a form of translation.

    E C translation is an inter linguistic operation based on translation units, which calls for the presence of an objective formal system to simplify and standardize the process of E C translation. Both English and Chinese share the same cognitive basis, and their individual characteristics are overtly manifested by their formal linguistic markers, which mirror the time space relationships between the basic linguistic structures and provides the important cognitive frame to guide the operation of translation units.

    On the Issues and Solutions about Translating Terminology of Traditional Chinese Wushu into English

    In the process of internationalization of Chinese Wushu (Chinese martial arts), the English translation of Wushu terminology is usually mixed and of varied standards, which leads to different English translations for one Chinese term, the same English translation for different Chinese terms, mechanical translations, mistranslations, and other issues. Translators, therefore, should propose proper solutions, in order to promote the introduction of Chinese culture into the world and better serve the readers for their understanding. On the one hand, translators should follow accurate, concise, univocal, professional and national characters and employ translating methods such as literal translation, free translation, transliteration and synthesized translation by the strategies that Foreinization method predominates over Domestication method when translating Wushu terminology. On the other hand, translators should strengthen the management of standardizing English translation of Wushu, utilizing terminology management techniques and tools to build the Wushu term base, translation memory (TM), language knowledge base, and make full use of the cloud technology from the Internet open platform, thereby promoting the efficiency of exchanging Wushu culture, improving its translation quality, and then helping the spread of Chinese Wushu to the rest of the world.

    An Introduction to The Red Chamber from the Perspective of Intertextual Writing

    Intertextual writing is a long established writing practice, which refers to the fact that when an author creates a specific text, other textual resources are used explicitly or implicitly. The English novel The Red Chamber written by Pauline Chen is a typical case of intertextual writing in that the author makes use of many other textual resources when she is creating the novel. And among them Hong Lou Meng is its most prominent intertextual resource, or rather its parental novel. This paper, taking Hong Lou Meng as a comparison, introduces and analyzes the The Red Chamber from four intertextual perspectives, namely, the variation of the fictional plots, of character images, of hidden themes and of intertextual resources.

    On the Misreading and Misinterpretations in the Study of the English Translation of Mo Yan's Works

    As a 2012 Nobel Prize laureate in literature, Mo Yan has ignited an explosion of global interests in the author and his works as well as in modern Chinese literature as a whole. Mo Yan's English translators and the English versions of his works have also caught the attention of mass media and academic circles alike, evidenced by a proliferation of publications on this subject, including newspaper reports, journal articles, research papers, and books. Plenty of research has been done on Howard Goldblatt, the main translator of Mo Yan's works, and his English translations by examining his translation theories, skills, and strategies. Past and present studies however, are beset by problems arising from misunderstandings of the translator and his translated works. This paper starts with the aim of clarifying these misunderstandings about the translator and his English translations of Mo Yan's works, followed by an introduction of the other three English translators apart from Howard Goldblatt and a detailed analysis of the various misreading and misinterpretations of the translator, and the original and translated texts.
