Abstract:

During the World Anti-Fascist War in the China Theater, the Foreign Affairs Bureau of the Military Commission of the Kuomintang Government played a crucial role by recruiting thousands of translators/interpreters, who made significant contributions to the victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. The study focuses on the recruitment notices and related reports published in the Central Daily News from 1941 to 1945, aiming to shed light on the two most significant elements of the translators’/interpreters’ qualifications and remuneration over time. By examining these historical materials, the study uncovers sharp contrasts between the images portrayed by the Bureau in the newspaper and those self-narrated in the autobiographies and memoirs of the translators/interpreters. This paper seeks to offer fresh insights and approaches to the images of translators and interpreters during wartime.
