西学东渐与近代知识体系的展开——以西周的“学”“术”及“科学”为中心

The Eastward Spread of Western Learning and the Development of the Modern Knowledge System: Centered on Nishi Amane’s ‘Science’ ‘Art’ and ‘Literature’

摘要:

史称西学东渐的西学,其本身由16世纪起到19世纪末也经历了质的分化与重组。其中由术到学,即近代科学的成立是最重要的变化。学科名称及指称内容的种种蜕变可以从西方19世纪的百科全书及语文词典中寻得踪迹。对于变化发展中的西学,东方的接受可以说是困难重重、历尽艰辛。日本明治启蒙家西周的《百学连环》(1871~1873)是一次重要的挑战。在《百学连环》中多达1851组的对译词或定义诠释,展示了西周对西方相关概念的理解,其中一部分译词极大地影响了东方后续的西学接受。本文以“学science”与“术art”为切入点,分析西周对西方学问体系的独特把握,进而具体阐述西周对东亚近代学术展开的贡献。

Abstract:

Historically known as “Western Learning’s Eastward Spread," Western learning itself Western learning itself experienced qualitative differentiation and reorganization from the sixteenth century up to the end of the nineteenth century. The most important change was the transition from ‘ART’ to ‘SCIENCE’, namely the establishment of modern science. The evolution of the names and content of disciplines can be traced back to Western encyclopedias and language dictionaries of the nineteenth century. The acceptance of evolving Western learning in the East can be described as being fraught with numerous difficulties and endured hardships. The Hyaku Gaku Renkan(1871—1873) by Japanese Meiji Enlightenment figure Nishi Amane was a significant challenge. In Hyaku Gaku Renkan, the interpretation of up to 1851 pairs of translated terms or definitions demonstrates Nishi Amane’s comprehension of Western concepts, a portion of which greatly influenced the East’s subsequent reception of Western learning. Focusing on Nishi Amane’s grasp of the terms “学science” and“术art”, this paper will analyze his unique understanding of the Western knowledge system, and further delineate his contributions to the development of modern academic studies in East Asia.
