A Chinese Approach to Contrastive Linguistics: Reflections on Pan Wenguo’s Academic Ideas on Linguistics WEI Zaijiang 2024, 24 (3):  5-12.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2024.03.001 Abstract ( 67 )   HTML ( 12 )   PDF (1323KB) ( 23 )   Professor Pan Wenguo’s ideas on contrastive linguistics are profound and highly innovative. His academic pursuits span across the boundaries of time and space, encompassing both Chinese and foreign languages, ancient and modern, with a broad academic vision and diverse research areas, each of which has significant influence. Professor Pan’s academic innovations include: (1) introducing the concepts of prose-style and parallel-style, which have enlightening implications for the study of Chinese parallelism today; (2) discussing “constructions” as another manifestation of Chinese function words, which is equally enlightening for today’s research on constructions; (3) producing the theory of Compositional Translatology. Prof. Liu learned, taught and explored translation studies in his lifetime and he has made great contribution in the field of translation studies out of his deep love for his motherland China. He worked hard, not for fame or fortune, wrote and published many pioneering and high quality books. Unfortunately, however, The Incense Will Last, our co-authored draft cannot be finished or published before his death. We can learn and benefit a lot from Prof. Liu, such as his love for his motherland, teaching and research insights, and his pursuit for translation and research. Thinking and researching about Modernization is a very important topic in Western academia. Since the reform and opening up of China, Chinese academia have begun to translate a large number of Western modernization theories systematically, which has had a great impact on the domestic academic scene. Through the translation of knowledge from other countries, on the one hand, it has promoted the exchange and mutual learning between Chinese and Western academic systems, and set off the discussion of modernization theories in the Chinese academia; on the other hand, it has also promoted the shaping and construction of an autonomous theoretical system of Chinese path to modernization. This paper, based on a review and reflection on the current status of translation history research in Chinese communication studies, explores the methods and pathways of translation history research in Chinese communication studies from the perspective of knowledge-centered translatology. Knowledge-centered translatology, by effectively incorporating a translational perspective with significance in the history of knowledge into Chinese disciplinary history, reveals the driving role of translation in intellectual and cultural change and the obscured value of knowledge growth, thus becoming a new growth point in the research of translation history. A Review of Studies on Translation and Dissemination of Ethnological Works in China: Status Quo, Reflection, and Prospect WANG Jing 2024, 24 (3):  43-53.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2024.03.005 Abstract ( 91 )   HTML ( 4 )   PDF (1347KB) ( 220 )   Chinese ethnology is a discipline introduced from the West and its establishment and development have been closely intertwined with the translation and dissemination of ethnological works in China. This paper first briefly outlines the Chinese translation history of ethnological works since the beginning of the 20th century and then investigates and analyzes the existing studies related to the Chinese translation of ethnological works respectively in translation studies community and ethnology community. It is found that the translation studies community primarily focuses on studies of translation history and ethnological translators, while the ethnology community’s research achievements are concentrated on bibliographic compilations and the descriptions of translation facts in disciplinary history. Based on the literature review and analysis, this paper reflects on the limitations of existing studies in terms of quality, scope, and perspective, and looks into the future research direction from the dimensions of macro-research, micro-research, academic environment, and academic responsibility. The Tibetan Gnomic Verses contain rich knowledge of geography and culture, religious culture and social culture, which is the true portrayal of Tibetan people’s wisdom and has high academic research value. With the continuous advancement and development of translating Chinese culture into foreign languages, the English translation of Tibetan Gnomic Verses has attracted many scholars’ attention. Guided by the theory of transknowletology, this paper explores the translator’s translation strategy and method selection in the English translation of Tibetan Gnomic verses from the translation criterion of “the true, the kind and the beautiful” so as to better transform “local knowledge” into “global knowledge” with a view to exploring the balanced-harmonious translation and making the translation of national classics more truthful, rigorous and richer and providing a new direction and thinking for the national classics to go global, and so as to make a modest contribution to forging a strong community for the Chinese nation and constructing a community with a shared future for mankind. As a cultural behavior and social practice of knowledge reproduction, translation is also inseparable from balanced-harmonious translation, which embodies “real meanings, full preparations and TT aesthetic conceptions”. Armed with “knowledge”, translators have gradually transitioned from excessive or ineffective roles to diversified ones, so as to give proper play to the translator’s subjectivity, improve the quality and efficiency of translation, and expand the way and scope of globalization of knowledge from the perspective of the methodology. An Overview of Foreign Studies on Conversation Repair of Special Populations: Present Situation and Significance MA Bosen, ZHANG Laiyun, ZENG Xiaorong 2024, 24 (3):  83-95.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2024.03.009 Abstract ( 62 )   HTML ( 2 )   PDF (1451KB) ( 25 )   Studies on conversation repair can reveal the similarities and differences between special populations and normal populations in terms of pragmatic and cognitive abilities. It can provide some references for clinical diagnosis and intervention practices. Therefore, the related studies have attracted the attention of researchers at home and abroad. This paper conducts a systematic review of studies on conversation repair of special populations from Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus by use of bibliometric and content analytic research methods. It is found that foreign studies on conversation repair of special populations show fluctuations in growth, and the empirical studies are in the majority. Based on elicited data, concentrated on patients with cognition impairment, the empirical studies have mainly adopted cross-sectional design to explore whether they have the ability to conduct conversation repair, and to explore whether they have some disorders when they conduct conversation repair. Besides, combined with personal factors and external factors, the empirical studies have explained the mechanism behind conversation repair and analyzed the effectiveness of equipment-supported and non-equipment-supported intervention methods. On the whole, the empirical studies show three trends: (1) the subjects tend to be more diverse; (2) the conversation data tend to be more natural; (3) the research contents tend to deepen constantly. Clarifying the language policy layout for the language disorder plays a pivotal role in solving their language problems. Based on the PKU Law Database, this study creates a language policy corpus for language disorders. It summarizes the general characteristics of language policy texts for language disorders. It uses Python’s natural language processing methods for LDA model and TF-IDF algorithm analysis of the self-generated corpus. The study analyzes the language policies for language disorders from temporal and spatial dimensions. It advocates strengthening the top-level design and integrating the language policy systems; unifying the terminology and promoting social ideology transformation; establishing language policy feedback channels to effectively serve language barrier communities, and providing a reference for improving the language policy system for language disorders and constructing an information-accessible society. Effects of EFL Proficiency and Task Complexity on Summary Writing Task PENG Cheng, BAO Zhen 2024, 24 (3):  110-120.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2024.03.011 Abstract ( 63 )   HTML ( 3 )   PDF (2095KB) ( 38 )   This study investigated the effects of EFL proficiency and task complexity on the summary writing performance and perceived task difficulty of 89 high school students. Summary writing tasks of varying complexities were administered, with the complexity manipulated by adjusting the linguistic complexity of the source text. The findings reveal that both EFL proficiency and task complexity have significant main effects on summary writing performance, although their interaction effect is not significant. Additionally, EFL proficiency and task complexity significantly influence task difficulty, without any interaction effect. The Song of “the Man with the Tomahawk”: Edgar Allan Poe in the Nineteenth-Century American Literary Criticism WANG Erlei, WANG Xinyu 2024, 24 (3):  121-129.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2024.03.012 Abstract ( 69 )   HTML ( 1 )   PDF (1346KB) ( 25 )   Poe’s literary criticism, because of frequent reproaches, has not received enough attention from academia. Through investigation, it is found that Poe was brave enough to deconstruct the authority of Anglo-American celebrities under the discourse of literary nationalism in American 19th-century literary criticism, criticizing the commercial peddling and puffing by the coteries for their usurpation of literary criticism in the process of the commercialization of the American book market, denouncing the subservient attitude of the American literati, while advocating for unpopular literary geniuses. Poe did not stop at exposing and scolding the chaos of literary criticism in the 19th-century American literary periodicals, but actively endeavored to construct the spirit and principles of literary criticism based on independence and self-discipline. The courage, conscience and sense of responsibility that Poe demonstrated in his literary criticism are of certain significance for current Chinese literary criticism. Probing into the Narrator’s Narrative Perspective on the Female Characters in Shadow Dance for its Ethics WU Jie 2024, 24 (3):  130-139.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2024.03.013 Abstract ( 53 )   HTML ( 3 )   PDF (1359KB) ( 4 )   Shadow Dance, the first novel written by Angela Carter, who claimed to be a feminist, showcases Carter’s criticism against the adverse effects of culture on both genders, demonstrating her initial awareness of feminism. Yet this awareness is indirect and implied, as it is embedded in the narrator’s surrealist perspective, and therefore readers readily blame the novel for its preoccupation with female masochism, and are blind to the “revolution” intended by surrealism. With an analysis of the narrator’s surrealist narrative perspective on the three female characters, this article intends to probe the perspective for its feminist ethics that challenges the patriarchal law embedded in them to different degrees. It argues that Ghislaine, seen from the counterculture in the 1960s, “no longer ‘performs’ her prudishness of the past” but her “liberation”, Edna has been awakening, and Emily is a woman warrior almost from the start. Chinese and Japanese Bilingual Hybrid and Defamiliarization: From I am a Cat to I am Like a Cat LIN Qi, XU Yujun 2024, 24 (3):  140-149.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2024.03.014 Abstract ( 45 )   HTML ( 4 )   PDF (1375KB) ( 33 )   Yokoyama’s I am Like a Cat follows the modern Japanese literary tradition of Natsume Soseki’s I am a Cat, and it combines Chinese and Japanese bilingual language practice to innovate a new style, which has become a cross-boundary masterpiece in the contemporary Sino-Japanese literary relations. This is a critical masterpiece in line with Natsume Soseki’s I am a Cat and Lu Xun’s A Q’s Diary. Its “mixed” style first aroused hot discussion in the Japanese world, and then its Chinese “untranslatable” translation once again created a defamiliarization effect. It not only has the practical significance of the language “transplantation” between China and Japan, but also has the significance to the style innovation. Based on a meticulous reading of The Breast through the lens of story and discourse of the narrative, this paper analyzes the desirous cause, utterance, and effect, and identifies the carnival poetic characteristics of Roth’s fiction. It is held that the “possible world” is in a sense the libido-driven result of the transition between the desire and the reality, which is of significance to understand the political farce that might be triggered by the American free desire and ethical system. Conversation between Translator and Writer: Exploring the Value of Translator’s “Questioning” in the English Translation Process of Chinese Literature: Examples from the English Translations of the Novel Massage HUANG Anqi, XU Shiyan 2024, 24 (3):  157-165.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2024.03.016 Abstract ( 76 )   HTML ( 1 )   PDF (1348KB) ( 108 )   In the current context of international communication capacity building, the foreign translation of Chinese literature has become a critical carrier for China to present its national image, spread Chinese culture and manifest its spirit to the world. As is known to all, translation is a guaranteed path for Chinese literature “going-out”, and translators play a vital role in the process of “going-out”. When the famous sinologist Howard Goldblatt and his wife Sylvia Li-chun Lin collaboratively translated the Chinese contemporary novel Massage in 2013 and 2014, they communicated closely with its writer Bi Feiyu. They totally asked 131 questions to the writer via e-mail while reading and translating the original work. And the author answered them one by one, effectively resolving translators’ puzzles, including problems about words and phrases comprehension, the logic structure of the text and original intentions of writing. By analyzing these emails, it can be found that translators’ “questioning” of the original literature work reflects the differences between Chinese and Western languages and cultures, and to some extent, helps the writer re-examine his own work from an external perspective. Therefore, the research based on correspondence between translators and the writer is of high value to comparative literature research and literary translation studies. The investigation of dynamic behavior of translators in the process of literary translation not only provides new ideas for the preservation and exchange of translation archives, but also opens up a new research paradigm for Chinese literary translation, so as to better present Chinese literature and culture to the world. On this basis, this paper argues that governmental language competence includes three dimensions: language category, language carrier and language quality. In handling of public affairs, there is need to strengthen language emergency construction and enhance the language capacity for serving special groups. Also, it is necessary to construct training mechanism for general and specific governmental language competence according to functions of government departments, and to develop detailed regulations for implementation. Discourse/Language Analysis: An Interdisciplinary Perspective——A Conference Review of the Third “Sun Yat-Sen Forum on Discourse Analysis” NIU Wenpei 2024, 24 (3):  173-184.  Abstract ( 72 )   HTML ( 1 )   PDF (1364KB) ( 53 )   “Sun Yat-Sen Forum on Discourse Analysis” is an academic forum organized by the Language Studies Institute of Sun Yat-Sen University in 2022. It is held each year in mid-April. The third “Sun Yat-Sen Forum on Discourse Analysis” was successfully held from April 13-14, 2024 at Yilin Holiday Hotel of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. The theme of the forum is: “Discourse/Language Analysis: A Cross-Disciplinary Perspective.” Nineteen (19) famous keynote speakers at home and abroad have given a variety of keynote speeches on this topic, including parallel forums, covering literature, philosophy, anthropology, management, computer science, artificial intelligence, clinical medicine, corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, functional linguistics, applied linguistics and other fields, fully demonstrating the practice of discourse analysis in interdisciplinary subjects. This brought a rich academic experience to the participants and provided excellent academic exchange opportunities for building a multi-disciplinary discourse analysis platform.
