    The Construction of Student-Centered, Harmonious Teacher-Student Relationships Driven by Educator Spirit

    Under the guidance of spirits of educators, this article firstly explores the contemporary significance and theoretical basis for the construction of harmonious teacher-student relationships. Then, based on the 14 student-centered principles proposed by the American Psychological Association and the semi-structured interview results with university teachers and students from different regions in China, six major characteristics of student-centered harmonious teacher-student relationships are extracted. Finally, guided by these characteristics, specific strategies for building student-centered harmonious relationships between foreign language teachers and students are proposed from five aspects: educational philosophy, teaching methods, learning environment, emotional support, and evaluation system. This article aims to provide references for foreign language teachers from both theoretical and practical perspectives and further promote the healthy development of foreign language education.

    Taking the linguistic landscape on Yinzhen Avenue in Daozhen Gelao and Miao Autonomous County of Guizhou province as a sample, this paper discusses the linguistic landscape in the urban center of ethnic minority areas with a focus on English use within the framework of the three core concepts of mobility, standardization and localization from the perspective of sociolinguistics of globalization. Through the statistical analysis of the language distribution proportions on the 240 collected linguistic signs, it is found that English is the second language after Chinese and has higher visibility and mobility than minority languages. Findings also show the low degree of standardization as well as the large proportion and high degree of localization in English use, which reflects the role of English in the linguistic landscape in presenting Chinese native culture and manifesting the Chinese people's cultural confidence and national identity, and discloses the low education level and the endangerment of ethnic minority languages. Such results have certain practical significance for knowing the language ecology in ethnic minority areas, and promoting the revision and implementation of national language planning and language policies.

    The traditional Chinese architectural terms and the basic elements of traditional architectural knowledge, are critical to whether traditional Chinese architectural knowledge can be cross-culturally reproduced effectively or not. Transknowletology defines translation as cultural behavior and social practice of cross-language knowledge processing, reconstruction and retransmission. From the perspective of Transknowletology and based on descriptive method, this paper explores the adoption of translation strategies and its reasons for the traditional Chinese architectural terms by taking English translation of the TOU-KUNG series terms in A Pictorial History of Chinese Architecture as examples to reveal the cross-culture reproduction pattern for transforming local traditional Chinese architectural knowledge into global knowledge. The research results indicate that the English translation strategies for TOU-KUNG series terms are as follows: transliteration as the dominating method, the construction of context, systematic expression and image-text interpretation. The analysis shows that the adoption of English translations strategies is influenced by the internal and external factors such as the historical background, the translation purpose, the translator's accomplishment and context. The paper has certain reference value to the globalization of local knowledge and the mutual learning of civilizations.

    English translations of ancient texts are important for spreading Chinese culture abroad. Domestication and foreignization strategies from the perspective of cross-cultural translation are practical considerations of the operational matrix. Translators must select a proper translation method based on the type of audience, the purpose of translation, the historical and cultural context, and the peculiarities of ancient texts. This article explores the characteristics and causes of the three approaches: translation by Chinese scholars, translation by Western scholars, and translation by Chinese and Western collaborators, requiring strong support from official institutions or private organizations. It also examines the content, quality, and orientation of overseas publications of English translations of ancient texts, especially English translation series, and advocates the strengthening of overseas publication and distribution, which will contribute to the dissemination of English translations of ancient texts overseas and the globalization of traditional Chinese culture.

    As a representative of the latest stage in artificial intelligence development, ChatGPT has attracted widespread attention from various sectors of society and has also brought new assistance to foreign language/second language writing instruction. From the perspective of activity theory, this paper analyzed college English writing instruction in the ChatGPT context, by exploring at each stage how teachers can effectively utilize ChatGPT to prepare and organize English writing instruction while actively mitigating potential risks associated with the new technologies. In this process, there have been corresponding changes in the teachers' roles. The teachers have reduced the time spent on knowledge output and repetitive tasks while increasing the emphasis on critical thinking and emotional guidance.

    This paper adopts the methods of combining critical discourse analysis with corpus linguistics, quantitative and qualitative comparison between local textbooks and global textbooks, discusses cultural representation in College English textbooks, and analyzes its impact on cultural representation from the perspective of register type and language characteristics, so as to clarify the differences in structural features and social attributes of language textbooks under different social and cultural backgrounds and guiding ideology. The results show that the local materials reflect the relational thinking of Chinese philosophical thought in terms of subject matter and help to construct foreign language learners’ identities by bringing them closer to learners through dialogical genres and micro-level linguistic features, thereby recontextualizing the language materials in the local materials. On the other hand, local textbooks can be further expanded in terms of subject matter, knowledge, and international perspectives, and they also need to work on how to build China’s image and tell China’s story at the level of national consciousness. This study has implications for the writing, evaluation, and adaptation of foreign language textbooks in the new era.

    A Meta-analysis of the Relationship Between L2 Willingness to Communicate and L2 Anxiety

    Willingness to communicate (WTC) has been extensively studied for its crucial role in affecting second/foreign language (L2) learning outcomes and L2 communicative competence. Previous studies have explored a range of factors affecting WTC including L2 anxiety. However, the findings about their links remain inconsistent. To this end, the present meta-analysis integrated results of 50 independent studies, showing that there was a medium negative correlation between WTC and L2 anxiety (r = -0.343, p < 0.001). In addition, their relationship was moderated by multiple variables including national varieties, second language type, and anxiety type. The findings provided implications for foreign language education practitioners in China and researchers in the field of WTC.

    A Review of Studies on Translation and Dissemination of Ethnological Works in China: Status Quo, Reflection, and Prospect

    Chinese ethnology is a discipline introduced from the West and its establishment and development have been closely intertwined with the translation and dissemination of ethnological works in China. This paper first briefly outlines the Chinese translation history of ethnological works since the beginning of the 20th century and then investigates and analyzes the existing studies related to the Chinese translation of ethnological works respectively in translation studies community and ethnology community. It is found that the translation studies community primarily focuses on studies of translation history and ethnological translators, while the ethnology community’s research achievements are concentrated on bibliographic compilations and the descriptions of translation facts in disciplinary history. Based on the literature review and analysis, this paper reflects on the limitations of existing studies in terms of quality, scope, and perspective, and looks into the future research direction from the dimensions of macro-research, micro-research, academic environment, and academic responsibility.

    This paper examines the status quo of the language service industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and identifies the key issues it faces, including a lack of strategic design, insufficient high-end language service resources, slow digitalization, and a lack of international perspective. To address these challenges and support the industry's healthy and sustainable development, this paper proposes specific measures, which include strengthening the strategic design of language services in the Greater Bay Area, cultivating high-end composite language service talents, promoting digital transformation within the industry, and expanding its international vision. By implementing these measures, the aim is to enhance the competitiveness and influence of the language service industry in the Greater Bay Area and contribute to its integrated development.

    Taking a mixed perspective of rhetoric theory and critical discourse analysis, and based on news editorials on the Joint Statement of the United States and China Regarding Trade Consultations published by Chinese and the US media, this research, by using quantitative study, word analysis, and text close reading method, illuminated the realization of rhetoric strategies and language characteristics in a conflict rhetoric situation about Sino-China trade friction and demonstrated the purpose of rhetorical discourse games around two countries' media's attitudes towards the political affair by taking a three-dimension analysis framework of language identification, interpretation and environmental explanation. As is shown in the results, Chinese media tended to use the strategies of “reason” and “logic” to persuade the audience, striving for easing the intensity of confrontation between China and the US, which reflected China's essential appeal of pursuing for conciliation, stabilization and mutual benefit. While the US media were good at taking the initiative by using the strategies of “emotion” and “power”. By putting an emphasize on exaggerating the conflict intensity between two countries, the US media manifested the essence of persisting in competition, change and confrontation. The research gave some enlightenments on how to respond to public opinions of foreign media and how to improve the rhetoric competence of Chinese media in the construction and development of game relationship between medias.

    “Sun Yat-Sen Forum on Discourse Analysis” is an academic forum organized by the Language Studies Institute of Sun Yat-Sen University in 2022. It is held each year in mid-April. The third “Sun Yat-Sen Forum on Discourse Analysis” was successfully held from April 13-14, 2024 at Yilin Holiday Hotel of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. The theme of the forum is: “Discourse/Language Analysis: A Cross-Disciplinary Perspective.” Nineteen (19) famous keynote speakers at home and abroad have given a variety of keynote speeches on this topic, including parallel forums, covering literature, philosophy, anthropology, management, computer science, artificial intelligence, clinical medicine, corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, functional linguistics, applied linguistics and other fields, fully demonstrating the practice of discourse analysis in interdisciplinary subjects. This brought a rich academic experience to the participants and provided excellent academic exchange opportunities for building a multi-disciplinary discourse analysis platform.

    Artificial intelligence (AI) represented by ChatGPT can not only promote learners to learn foreign languages but also improve teachers’ work efficiency and reduce their work burden. However, the educational revolution triggered by ChatGPT brings challenges to foreign language teaching and results in identity tensions to foreign language teachers. By reviewing research on the application of AI in the field of foreign language teaching and language teacher identity, this paper analyses challenges of foreign language teaching and teachers, identity tensions and solutions, and puts forward corresponding suggestions from three aspects, including teachers, schools, and government. This paper not only provides theoretical support and practical guidance for the implementation of AI-assisted teaching in the field of foreign language education but also has enlightenment for other subjects in dealing with teacher identity tensions and exploring the path of deep integration of AI and education.

    The Theory of State Translation Program is an epoch-making translation theory pioneered by Chinese scholars. National discourse translation, as a self-interested national event, involves multiple national concerns. The powerful cognitive function of metaphor makes it a commonly employed method and a focus in national discourse translation. Meanwhile, the rich associative meanings of metaphor pose challenges in its translation. Taking the Resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on the Major Achievements and Historical Experience of the Party over the Past Century (abbreviated as the “Resolution”) as a sample, the exploration of metaphor translation in national discourse, guided by the Theory of State Translation Program, contributes to the construction of national translation competence.

    From the perspective of transknowletology, this paper explores van Gulik’s English translation of Chinese classics and its impact on knowledge production, which is of great practical significance for promoting the international dissemination of local knowledge in the new era. The study finds that van Gulik constructed the cultural context of the original text through the practice of thick translation, while simultaneously popularizing pertinent knowledge. This included information of the author’s background, knowledge of the subject (or the theme), writing style, and the customs, allusions and myths contained within words or sentences. During the thick translation process, van Gulik meticulously examined various versions of the source text and consulted others’ translation to ensure the accuracy of local knowledge in his translations and annotations. Concurrently, he rectified misunderstandings of relevant Chinese knowledge in the West and facilitated the international dissemination of Chinese culture. His translation has the function of knowledge construction and has a profound influence on the target language culture.

    Pre-service Teachers’ Acceptance of Artificial Intelligence-assisted Foreign Language Education

    Based on prior technology acceptance research, the study employed the focus group interview method and investigated 11 pre-service English teachers’ acceptance of artificial intelligence-assisted English pronunciation training. Results from the thematic analysis suggest that this cohort of pre-service teachers held paradoxical views towards this approach. On one hand, they acknowledged its usefulness and ease of use; while on the other hand, they showed negative attitude and low intention to adopt this approach. The findings of this study are of practical value for preparing pre-service teachers for the incoming artificial intelligence era and optimizing the forms of language education in the new era.

    As the subject of translation, translator the manipulator should adhere to and apply the principles of being true, good and beautiful in translation process so that new knowledge can be created and harmony between cultures can come into being in the internationalized process of the foreign knowledge. The ideas about translation proposed by Yu Guangzhong and the translations by him are embodiments of the ideas about “harmony” in Chinese culture, which reflects and highlights the importance and significance of Chinese culture and traditional Chinese thought to translation studies.

    Every culture and discipline is generally centered on the three basic concepts of “real meanings, full preparations and TT aesthetic conceptions”. As a cultural behavior and social practice of knowledge reproduction, translation is also inseparable from balanced-harmonious translation, which embodies “real meanings, full preparations and TT aesthetic conceptions”. Armed with “knowledge”, translators have gradually transitioned from excessive or ineffective roles to diversified ones, so as to give proper play to the translator’s subjectivity, improve the quality and efficiency of translation, and expand the way and scope of globalization of knowledge from the perspective of the methodology.
