    Rhythm Resonance Between English and Chinese Poetry

    Poetry translation in modern China has a history of more than one hundred years, but countless poetry translations have silently revealed a fact that there is only difference between English and Chinese poetry, but no resonance. However, this is a misleading “fact”, which is caused by the prevalent methods of poetry translation for such a long time, the methods that have failed to demonstrate the true face of the original, hence keeping quite a distance from the poetic truth of the source poems in almost all the translations. However, if we try to maintain the rhythm of the original by taking the most reasonable measure, we will be surprised to find that, in terms of rhythm between English and Chinese poetry, although there is great difference, there is also some resonance. This paper will use a new poetry translation method to show such a resonance.

    A Theoretical Model of Translation and Discipline Development: A Research Framework for Translation History of Chinese Disciplines Based on Transknowletology

    The research on the translation history of discipline has begun to emerge and gradually become one of the new trends in the study of the translation history. Both the number and the quality of research are on the rise, while its research methodology has received very limited attention. With the support of transknowletology, this paper tries to put forward the “theoretical model of translation and discipline development” after empirical investigations, to explain the relationship between translation and discipline development under the Chinese modern disciplinary system. It is found that with the help of translation, the traditional Chinese disciplines have “evolved” into modern disciplines, while the western modern disciplines have been “transplanted” into China. This model can be used as a framework for the translation history studies of discipline, to examine the contributions of translation in the development of a discipline.

    Applied Translation Studies: On Knowledge Reproduction of Translation Communities

    Transknowletology is centered around the exploration of how meta-disciplines like natural science, social science, and humanities can be effectively translated, which emphasizes that the widespread sharing of local knowledge can be accomplished by modifying language, knowledge and discourse construction. This paper explores the development of Pragmatic Translation Studies (PTS) in China, as promoted by the pragmatic translation group with specifical concern about the reproduction, dissemination and discourse construction of knowledge, which, according to the principles of Transknowletology, are key factors in achieving global dissemination of local knowledge. The examination of the actives of pragmatic translation group reveals the accomplishments made by the pragmatic translation group in reconstructing local knowledge and promoting its transformation into global knowledge.

    Wang Rongpei's English translation of Chinese classics has been studied extensively by scholars from various perspectives. However, there has been limited research conducted from the perspective of Transknowletology, which views translation as a cultural behavior and social practice in knowledge processing, reconstruction, and re-publicization through cross-linguistic interaction between local knowledge and global knowledge. This paper aims to explain Wang Rongpei's translating selection, as well as his translating thoughts, which aim to convey the full meaning and flavor of the original text, within the framework of Transknowletology. This approach will broaden the scope of translators' studies.

    A Study of the English Translation of Numbers in CH'I MIN YAO SHU from the Perspective of Transknowletology

    From the perspective of Transknowletology, translation is a worldwide identification of local knowledge. The English translation of numbers in Ch'i Min Yao Shu is the important part of the worldwide identification of local knowledge of this ancient book. This study focuses on the English translation of numbers in A Preliminary Survey of the Book CH'I MIN YAO SHU, which is an abbreviated English translation of Ch'i Min Yao Shu, and focuses on the summary, generalization, and analysis of three methods of English translation of numbers: synonymous corresponding translation, equivalent numbers corresponding translation and proportional conversion translation. Expressions of numbers in agricultural classics contain traditional cultural connotations of China. English translation of numbers is one of the key points in the external dissemination of agricultural classics, and handling English translation of numbers is one of the important ways for Chinese classics to spread around the world.

    The Design and Evaluation of A Blended Academic English Writing Course Incorporating Ideological and Political Education

    Blended teaching is a hot topic in foreign language instruction, but there is little research and practical application of incorporating ideological and political education into blended academic English courses. This study demonstrates the design of a blended academic English writing course that integrates ideological and political education in terms of teaching objectives, teaching contents, and teaching methods, with typical cases to illustrate the points. The study also combines quantitative and qualitative research methods to validate the teaching effectiveness. The quantitative research utilizes questionnaires to gain insights into students' perspectives on blended teaching. It also conducts paired sample t-test to assess students' perceptions of their abilities and overall qualities before and after the course and performs one-way ANOVA on academic paper drafts at the initial, second, and final stages. Qualitative research uses the messages left on Canvas teaching system to further explain the quantitative results. It is found that students generally approve of blended teaching. They perceived that they have not only enhanced their skills for reading literature, writing research papers, and delivering academic presentations, but also developed their overall competence. Besides, the quality of the final paper is significantly better than that of the initial drafts. This study provides a methodology for integrating ideological and political education into blended teaching.

    A Study on Language Conflicts in China's Neighboring Countries from the Holistic View of National Security

    Language conflict constitutes one of the central concerns in research on national language security. Under the holistic view of national security, the development of national language security capabilities should encompass not only an exploration of national language capabilities and language resources but also a significant focus on investigating language conflicts in China's neighboring countries. This expanded perspective serves to enhance the construction of holistic national security. This study first clarifies the concept of language conflict, and then conceives an analytical framework based on relevant theories of language planning. A language security database is then built through corpus method. The study finds that: in terms of characteristics, language conflicts arising from status planning and minority language education demonstrate complex inter-level oppositions of orientations in language planning, while cases related to corpus planning and foreign language education primarily reflect intra-level contradictions of these orientations. In terms of causes, the primary sources of language conflicts in China's neighboring countries include the language-as-problem orientation held by dominant ethnic groups, certain elite groups, and manifested in acquisition planning of minority and foreign languages. Paying attention to language conflicts in neighboring countries and strengthening the construction of national language security capabilities will help improve and expand holistic national security capacity.

    A Multimodal Discourse Analysis of Patriotism in Together Against COVID-19

    With the advancement of science and technology and the development of digitalization, multimodal communication has become the norm in people's daily life. Among these modalities, documentaries have gained the popularity of the audiences with their objective and vivid narrative style. During the Covid-19 pandemic, “Country and Home Sentiment” has once again become a buzzword dominating major media outlets and many documentaries on anti-epidemic themes are the epitome of this sentiment. Taking Together Against COVID-19 as an example, this article employs a combined methodology of quantitative and qualitative research to conduct a multimodal discourse analysis of the “Country and Home Sentiment” portrayed within the documentary. The study reveals that, in terms of symbolic resources utilization, the construction of “Country and Home Sentiment” in the film mainly relies on verbal narration and visual scenes, while the frequency of font and graphic symbols remains relatively low. Different types of multimodal synergies play direct or indirect roles in the construction process. This study, on the one hand, expands the dimensions of multimodal analysis within dynamic discourse; on the other hand, it showcases the Chinese people's sense of responsibility and mission in the face of significant public health events, which is conducive to the healthy social development.

    Junior High School English Teachers' Conceptions of Course-books and Individual Differences

    Teachers' attitudes toward course-books directly influence teachers' choice of teaching content and thus affect the teaching processes and students' learning outcomes, but current research in China on English teachers' attitudes towards course-books has mainly involved higher education, and there is a lack of research on teachers' views on course-books at the basic education level. Based on a questionnaire, this study surveyed 123 junior high school English teachers' attitudes toward course-books when setting up writing instructional programs in nine middle schools in Shanghai. It was found that most of the junior high school English teachers had an “authoritative” view of course-books, and there were fewer teachers taking on “adaptive” and “creative” approaches, which suggests that course-books were still the main teaching materials and the basis for teachers' teaching activities. Further analysis revealed that there was no significant association between teachers' educational level and the number of in-service professional development opportunities and teachers' views on course-books, while there were significant associations between teachers' attitude toward course-books and teachers' grade level, teachers' years of teaching experience, teachers' pre-service professional education, and teachers' familiarity with curriculum standards.

    This paper offers a comprehensive review of Brian Tomlinson's theoretical principles, core issues and directions in materials development for language teaching over the past 20 years from the perspective of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). It critically examines textbook development principles and multiple core issues relating to English textbook development in five aspects with reference to Chinese researchers' empirical findings and reflections in ELF. This is done with a view of compiling English syllabi in China for constructing ELF materials for language teaching. The review aims to raise awareness of the need to further disseminate national cultures and Chinese values in English syllabi and textbook development, to focus on core issues in textbook development with Chinese characteristics, and to expand foreign language education in serving the implementation of the “Belt and Road” initiative.

    Foreign Language Learning Anxiety in SPOC Blended Courses

    Integrating Internet technology into classroom teaching, SPOC blended course has greatly transformed traditional teaching mode and has become the mainstream of English teaching mode in higher education of China. As a key affective factor in regard to language learners' adaptation to different teaching modes, learning anxiety deserves wide attention and research, yet there are only a few empirical studies that place it in the SPOC blended course. This study investigated college students' foreign language learning anxiety under the context of SPOC blended course in comparison with the traditional mode. The findings showed that compared to students in traditional language classrooms, students in SPOC blended courses reported lower anxiety in general, but significant higher anxiety in academic performance. With regard to differences in gender in SPOC blended course, girls' general anxiety was higher than that of boys, and girls showed significantly higher classroom anxiety. Aimed at providing reference for deeper integration of modern information technology and foreign language teaching, this study ends with practical suggestions on reforming SPOC blended foreign language courses in higher education.

    Reflections on the Professional Development of Teachers Empowered by Communities of Practice in the Context of Educational Modernization

    Teacher practical knowledge is one of the important influencing factors for teacher professional development. This study takes college English teachers as the subjects, and through qualitative research methods, collects data such as interviews, classroom observations, teaching logs, and teaching courseware to examine their development of practical knowledge after participating in the community of practice, and explores the path of professional development of college English teachers under the background of the modernization of education. The study found that after the experiment, the subjects fully affirmed the role of information technology in promoting teaching and learning, and their practical knowledge level was improved. The problems in teaching design, classroom implementation, and post class reflection were all improved, but no significant changes were found in teacher concepts, knowledge foundation, and teaching practice. Overall, the development of practical knowledge among teachers is influenced by various factors such as teachers themselves, work environment, and external support. Focusing on the practical knowledge research of teachers in the context of educational modernization has certain enlightening significance for teacher development, school management, and educational informatization construction.

    The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Competence of university English teacher educators has its unique constituent elements, hierarchical structure and characteristics. By means of the Literature Research Method, the Interviewing Method, the Delphi Method and the Confirmatory Factor Analysis, the paper makes an exploration and discovers that their SoTL Competence is composed of 4 first-level indicators, 12 second-level indicators and 27 third-level indicators. The 4 first-level indicators include the ability to establish SoTL concepts, the ability to apply SoTL knowledge, the ability to develop English SoTL and the influencing ability of English SoTL. Disciplinarity, demonstration, integration, interaction and practice are their main characteristics. These ability elements of different levels are different from each other, but they are interrelated and complement each other. As a whole, they develop from basic level to high level and show a pyramid structure, which possesses the features of hierarchy and discrimination.

    Fusion of Horizons in Translation and Translators' Subjectivity

    The essence of translation is the interpretation of the original text, so the translator needs, in the form of dialogue, to fuse his or her horizon with other horizons in translation to expand a larger and more comprehensive horizon. There are at least four times of fusion of horizons in translation, that is, the fusion of the translator's original horizon with that of the author, the text, the target culture, and the target reader. The translator will be influenced by the interaction of the fusion of different horizons and then make some adjustments for horizons to make the final horizon perfect. The process connects the past, present, and future, and builds a dialogue across time and space. The fusions help to shorten the distance between the translator and respective subjects and objects in translation, deepen their understanding, and, keeping up with the times, flexibly adjust the distance between the translated text and the two languages concerned. The fusions of horizons may lead to a deviation in the horizon between the source text and the target text. Still, this deviation is to extend the life of the original better and promote multi-cultural exchanges and common prosperity.

    The urgent need of the language service industry, the requirement of translation professionalization and the advancement of translation technology push the rapid development of artificial intelligence translation, profoundly affecting people's understanding about translation. The paper firstly clarifies the knowledge principle of artificial intelligence translation, and reflects troubling ethical questions raised by artificial intelligence translation. Besides, centered around the principles of real meanings, full preparations and aesthetic conceptions from transknowletology, the paper endeavors to ethically prescribe artificial intelligence translation to cope with the new ethical challenges posed by it nowadays and in the near future.

    English Translation Strategies Based on Chinese Translations of Mongolian Poems:A Case Study of Selected Poems by China's Contemporary Poets of Mongolian Ethnicity

    The poems written in Mongolian by contemporary Inner Mongolian poets are indispensable to contemporary Chinese literature. A large part of these poems have been widely circulated in Chinese, and based on the Chinese version, a small part of them have been selected to be translated into foreign languages, which enables Inner Mongolia poetry to spread in a wider literary space. After comparing Selected Poems by China's Contemporary Poets of Mongolian Ethnicity (Chinese version) with its English translation, this paper shows that if the translator wants to keep the flavor of source-language poems, it is sometimes necessary to retrieve information from the poems in Mongolian, recreate the imaginary world, set out each poet's individuality, choose the best words, and take full advantage of target-language poetic devices to get the musical effect.

    Construction and Application of the Chinese-English Composite Corpora of Homogeneous Texts by Mao Zedong

    Based on the changes in different versions of texts, this paper discusses the issue of homogeneous texts and their translations at the theoretical level, and introduces the homogeneous texts in Mao Zedong's works and their English translations. On that basis, the paper describes the design and creation of the Chinese-English Composite Corpora of Homogeneous Texts by Mao Zedong, and introduces the basic information, research models and application areas of the corpora. Compared with parallel corpora in the general sense, the Chinese-English Composite Corpora of Homogeneous Texts by Mao Zedong can be used to examine the changes between homogeneous texts, and relevant findings can not only explain the discrepancies between different translations, but also shed new light on many relevant research areas, including the studies of Mao's discourse, the studies of Mao's thought, the studies of China's national image construction from diverse perspectives.
