Consciousness of China’s Image and a Few Word Choices in the English Version of the Report to the 20th National Congress of the CPC
    CHEN Fachun
    2023, 23 (5):  7-15.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2023.05.001
    Abstract ( 344 )   HTML ( 11 )   PDF (1352KB) ( 123 )

National image is an integral part of national soft power. The attention, attitude and actions that citizens take for their national image reveal the intensity of their national consciousness. The Communist Party of China (CPC), under the leadership of Xi Jinping, has been attaching great importance to the shaping and projection of China’s image as a big country of long civilization, eastern culture, international responsibility and socialism, presenting a true, multi-dimensional, and panoramic view of China and a China that is credible, appealing, and respectable. The English version of the Report to the 20th National Congress of the CPC was the collaborate accomplishment of the national translation team with native speakers of English and has been highly successful on the whole in projecting a positive image for the CPC and for China. However, for better cross-cultural communication, a few words used in the report can be further discussed, such as the third person plural pronoun, words of priorities and a proper noun in particular.

    An Embodied-Cognitive Interpretation of Transknowletology(I)
    WANG Yin
    2023, 23 (5):  16-22.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2023.05.002
    Abstract ( 371 )   HTML ( 8 )   PDF (1070KB) ( 117 )

Scholars both at home and broad have been seeking hard for the essence of translation for many years, but without any result. Yang Feng has rethought this orientational error of “Forgetting essence because of usage; Losing Dao (doctrine) in sight of Qi (utensil)” in traditional translation studies, thus considering only knowledge as the essence of translation, based on which Transknowletology has been proposed. So we should devote ourselves to the behaviour, relationship, movement and regulation in the processing of cross-language knowledge, its reconstructing and redisseminating. Epistemology thinks that human knowledge mainly originates from our experience (perception) and mind (rationality), the former being named “ti (body)” and the latter “ren (cognition)”, which is so-named “Linguistic Embodiment-Cognition View” being recently discussed by SISU Team. The present paper thinks that this view can not only explain the origin of language and knowledge, but also deepen the research of Trnasknowletology. If the essence of translation is knowledge, the essence of knowledge is embodiment-cognition, thus Transknowletology and Embodied-Cognitive Tanslatology are on the same track.

The Correlations of Essential Elements Involved in Transknowletology and the Light of Approaches to Transnational History Studies Shed on Transknowletology
    ZHANG Baoguo
    2023, 23 (5):  23-32.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2023.05.003
    Abstract ( 237 )   HTML ( 4 )   PDF (1489KB) ( 95 )

By drawing on Actor Network Theory and transnational history studies, this paper explores the relation between “knowledge” and “translation” in Transknowletology, and what Transknowletology can learn from “cultural transfer” and “entangled history”, two approaches to transnational history studies. The paper maintains that knowledge and translation are mutually defined in their correlations; the world of knowledge is transformed into the world of translation through the “mediation” of the translator’s world, and the three worlds construct mutually to form a dynamic network of relations; “interessment translationANT” is helpful to investigate the interests distribution mechanism of translation as knowledge behavior from the linguistic and sociological perspectives; the theoretical views upheld by the entangled history study can enlighten us to think carefully about reflexivity, underline historicity, focus on intersection, guard against over-insistence on causality, and emphasize interactive relations in the study of Transknowletology. In addition, it summarizes the basic connotation of the study of “knowledge transfer” and some views on the study of conceptual history in Transknowletology.

Reproduction and Reconstruction of Knowledge of Translation Studies:A Case Study of Chinese-Japanese Translation of On Translation
    LU Dongli, LI Huihui
    2023, 23 (5):  33-42.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2023.05.004
    Abstract ( 176 )   HTML ( 4 )   PDF (1550KB) ( 133 )

Since the beginning of the new century, the foreign translation of translation academic discourse has become an important way for the spread of Chinese translation theories, which enables our communication and mutual learning with academic systems overseas. On Translation has spread the translation studies of Chinese scholars in the international academic world, and promote the exchange of translation studies between China and foreign countries, thus has important values of translation. Based on the Transknowletology, this paper argues that the essence of the academic Japanese translation practice of On Translation is the process of converting knowledge of Chinese translation studies to international translation studies by translation, which is actually the reproduction and reconstruction of knowledge of translation studies. On this basis, the translation strategies of academic discourses, logical discourses and literary discourses are discussed, with a view to providing a reference for knowledge translatology in the foreign translation practice of Chinese translation studies discourse.

    Quantized Motion Trajectory of Event
    PENG Xuanwei, GAO Jihua
    2023, 23 (5):  43-65.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2023.05.005
    Abstract ( 154 )   HTML ( 5 )   PDF (4137KB) ( 96 )

In comparison with previous accounts on the dynamicality of sentence meaning by the Newtonian mechanics, this study, via category formulation quantization, aims at the same issue by focusing on one aspect of it, namely motion trajectory of verbal event. The research objective is Mandarin Chinese verb system, which is specified as 5 simplex types of typical motion distance with 2 complex types in terms of duration and end property: zero, line, point-to-point, point-to-line, line-to-point, line-to-line and multi-dimensional transformations, along with a number of factors, including tempora-spatial interaction, interval pattern, displacement value, motion durativity, semantic domain commitment, categorical angle and quantum attribute. All of these are represented with a systemic network in AND and OR relations, characteristics of entanglement and superposition states of quantum movement, which may reflect one essential working mechanism of the brain and thinking.

Situation-Emotion Correlation and Homophonic Figure of Speech
    LIAO Qiaoyun, XU Shenghuan
    2023, 23 (5):  66-74.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2023.05.006
    Abstract ( 116 )   HTML ( 2 )   PDF (1372KB) ( 45 )

This paper studies the usage of Chinese homophonic figure of speech from the perspective of Situation-Emotion Correlation Theory(SECT). The choice of homophonic expressions is determined by mental tendency. The SECT is formed under the guidance of traditional Chinese culture and in the light of the academic development of cognitive science. The idea of situation-emotion correlation gives a general rule of language use and reflects the basic principles of language use, which means that in any successful language use, the “feeling” of the speech subject is always related to the “situation” involved in the discourse, and the receptive subject of the speech will feel the same as if he himself experienced it in person. On the basis of this, the communicative subjects can express and understand the given expressions in the situation. This process is represented in language as emotion-scenery-diction correlation, which can be summarized as “Emotion changes with scenery and the diction goes with the emotion”. The expression of homophonic figure of speech means that a pair of homophonic “words” express the emotion of the discourse subject on the spot.

A Study on the Embodied-cognitive Generation Path and Discourse Representation of Quale-sense
    ZHOU Guijun, LIN Lin
    2023, 23 (5):  75-82.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2023.05.007
    Abstract ( 129 )   HTML ( 3 )   PDF (1340KB) ( 30 )

Quale-sense is a kind of subjective feeling that the discourse subject generates towards the language object. Based on the principle of “reality-cognition-language”, this paper explores the embodied-cognitive generation path of quale-sense in the psychological dimension and the discourse representation of that in the linguistic dimension. The findings are as follows: (1)The generation process of quale-sense is the embodied-cognitive construction process that the discourse subject exerted on the language object. The object echoes the materialism reflected by the connotation of “Ti (embodiment)”, and the subject responds to the humanistic view of “Ren (cognition)” in the embodied-cognitive view.(2)The discourse representation of quale-sense conforms to the embodied-cognitive (Ti-Ren) principle, that is, the interactive experience and cognitive processing in the external world are the premise of discourse construction. Combined with Paivio’s “dual coding” representation system, the subject cognitive system involves two systems of image and semiotic representation. As the image representation, quale-sense corresponds to the semiotic representation respectively, so the discourse representation of quale-sense can be triggered.

Metacognitive Engagement of Chinese College Students in English Deep Reading:An Empirical Study Based on Digital Footprint
    CHEN Dongchun, DENG Yujie
    2023, 23 (5):  83-92.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2023.05.008
    Abstract ( 276 )   HTML ( 6 )   PDF (1968KB) ( 119 )

Currently, digital reading has become a fashionable form of reading, deeply influencing the reading behavior of college students and leading to a scarcity of deep reading. From the perspective of metacognitive engagement theory, deep reading is closely related to metacognitive engagement. Developing a scale of metacognitive engagement in English reading based on digital footprints can help examine the status of deep reading in readers. By constructing the scale and conducting empirical research on the digital footprints of students from multiple universities in English reading, the results show that the metacognitive engagement of Chinese college students in English reading is insufficient. Individual differences are mainly reflected in the aspects of timing and strategy in the behavior engagement, as well as the aspects of concentration and persistence in the thinking engagement. There is an overall lack of emotional engagement, and deep reading has not been universally achieved. The design of the scale of metacognitive engagement provides references for the optimization of digital reading platforms and the exploration of the pathways to promote English deep reading.

A Discussion on National Translation and National Translation Program
    PAN Yanyan
    2023, 23 (5):  148-156.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2023.05.015
    Abstract ( 230 )   HTML ( 3 )   PDF (1332KB) ( 83 )

In the new era, the concepts of “national translation”, “national translation practice”, “national translation program” and “national translation studies” have been proposed, reflecting the practical concerns and active responses to China’s national strategic needs among Chinese scholars of translation studies. Since these new concepts and theories are still developing, some issues need to be clarified, and further improvements need to be made. This paper attempts to clarify the relationship between emerging translation concepts from the perspectives of patronage theory and ideology so as to find their distinctive features and construct a national translation system, which is helpful in facilitating subsequent translation research, translation practice, and the development of translation disciplines.

Stylistic Features of Six Full English Translations of Mencius: A Corpus-Based Multidimensional Analysis
    LOU Baocui, ZHAO Dongyang
    2023, 23 (5):  157-166.  DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1674-8921.2023.05.016
    Abstract ( 229 )   HTML ( 4 )   PDF (1486KB) ( 96 )

Based on the corpus of six full English translations of Mencius, this study uses hierarchical clustering and multidimensional analysis to examine the similarities and differences of the stylistic features, and explores the potential factors affecting the retranslation of classics. It is found that, in terms of genre, most translations and the non-literary genre of popular reading are grouped into one category. In terms of text type, the translations generally show the characteristics of Involved Persuasion and there exist stylistic variations in certain chapters, possibly due to the influence of the source text and individual differences of translators. In terms of style feature, the differences among translations are mainly reflected in the dimensions of Overt Expression of Persuasion and Abstract/Non-Abstract Information, and the differences in linguistic features can verify the results of genre and text type features. This study contributes to expanding the scope of the studies on the translation of classics and can serve as a significant reference for the translation of Chinese thought and culture.
